What to do next

Contact an emergency hospital ASAP and don’t let your dog lick their penis

  • Contact the vet before travelling to ensure they are able to see your pet. They may also need to give you specific instructions. Some regular hospitals will also be able to see your pet.
  • Do not feed your dog. The emergency vet will likely need to sedate your dog, and in these cases it is ideal if your dog doesn’t have a full stomach.
  • Don’t let your dog rub/scratch their penis. Use a cone if you have one. You can also wrap the penis to their abdomen with a clean and damp sheet.

Why it’s an emergency

Untreated prolonged erections can lead to severe tissue damage

  • Erections do not usually last more than 30 minutes. We are concerned about priapism and paraphimosis, where the penis becomes trapped outside the body.
  • Sometimes the skin can be damaged (due to infection, trauma, or a persistent erection) and start bleeding. Bleeding may also be caused by a transmissible venereal tumor.
  • Left untreated, these conditions can lead to severe tissue damage (resulting in possible amputation), so your dog requires immediate veterinary attention.

First aid tips

Avoid the affected area and seek veterinary care ASAP.
