Shedding or hair loss

Urgency level: High priority

Contact your regular veterinary hospital

What to do next

Contact your regular hospital ASAP and make sure your dog has access to water

  • If your regular veterinary hospital is open, contact them now. If they are closed, it is probably safe to wait until morning.
  • If your dog is scratching, put a cone/socks on them to prevent them from damaging their skin.
  • Do not take away their water.

Why it’s high priority

Concurrent symptoms with hair loss (especially drinking more) usually indicate a chronic issue

  • Shedding on its own is usually not a serious issue, but based on the symptoms you’ve selected, your dog could have a condition that requires veterinary attention as soon as possible.
  • Some of the conditions we are worried about include diabetes, hormone imbalances, kidney or liver problems

Home care tips

Regular grooming helps reduce shedding when it’s not caused by disease

  • Regular brushing (once a week, more frequently for some breeds) and bathing (once a month) may help with the shedding.
  • If your dog’s coat is very dirty or matted, consider taking them to a pet groomer.
