Your assessment results for:

Urgency level: Medium priority

Contact your family veterinary practice in 1-2 days if not resolved, or if the situation gets worse

What to do next

Monitor your dog and feed a bland diet if they have an upset stomach

  • Monitor your dog closely for any new symptoms or changes in behavior. Contact an emergency hospital if your dog:
    • Vomits more than 3 times within 24 hours or persists for more than a day
    • Projectile vomits
    • Becomes very lethargic
    • Doesn’t pass stool for more than a day
    • Can’t keep water down (or drinking causes them to vomit)
    • Has very pale or white gums
    • Develops a bloated or swollen abdomen
  • If you suspect your dog’s tummy is upset, you can feed them a bland diet of rice and boiled chicken in small but frequent meals. You can also add a tablespoon of plain probiotic yogurt (though some dogs are lactose intolerant)

Why it’s medium priority

Vomiting without other symptoms may resolve on its own

  • Vomiting in dogs has a variety of causes of wide ranging severity. It can be difficult to find out what the cause is, but based on the fact that your dog isn’t showing other symptoms, their vomiting may resolve on its own with rest and home management.
  • Some causes of vomiting that do not require immediate veterinary attention include dietary indiscretion and minor gastroenteritis.

Home care tips

Practice good hygiene and encourage your dog to drink water

  • Wash your hands with soap after handling your dog, as some causes of vomiting can also affect humans.
  • Prevent your dog from getting dehydrated by encouraging them to drink water. You can also mix in a little water with their food.
  • Restrict exercise to short leashed walks only, as your dog is likely not feeling well.
