Weight Loss

Urgency level: High priority

Contact your regular veterinary hospital

What to do next

Contact your regular veterinary hospital ASAP and monitor your dog closely for other symptoms

  • If your regular veterinary hospital is open, contact them now. If they are closed, it is probably safe to wait until morning.
  • Monitor your dog closely for any new symptoms or changes in behavior.
Contact an emergency veterinary hospital right away if your dog:
  • Becomes very lethargic
  • Collapses or faints
  • Vomits
  • If your dog’s hair didn’t fall back into position in the “neck scruff pinch test”, this indicates that they may be dehydrated. Encourage them to drink water or mix some water in with their food.

Why it’s high priority

Weight loss accompanied by other symptoms typically indicate a worsening chronic condition

  • Weight loss on its own is typically not an emergency, as underlying causes are likely chronic. Changes in weight tend to be gradual in dogs (usually over the span of weeks), and become more problematic when there are other symptoms, such as changes in food and water intake, urination and defecation.
  • Based on the symptoms you’ve selected, your dog’s condition has progressed to a point that that requires attention by your regular veterinarian as soon as possible.

Home care tips

Restrict your dog’s activity and take note of your dog’s habits, especially if there are changes

  • Restrict your dog from strenuous exercise levels until you can see your vet.
  • Take note of the amount and type of food you are feeding your dog, and whether there have been any changes in eating, drinking, urination and defecation habits.
