Peeing Blood

If you notice blood in your dog’s urine (anywhere form a light pink color to bright red), stay calm and try to pay attention to the next time they urinate. Details like whether they’re able to pee a full stream or in small bursts, whether they’re straining or yelping and if there’s more licking around their hind end will all help your vet determine the underlying cause of the issue. Although urinary tract infections and bladder stones are among the most common reasons seen, there’s a variety of causes.

Most cases can are treatable, and your vet will require a urine sample to test for bacteria, red blood cells, pus, crystals and in rare cases, certain cancerous cells. It’s always a good idea to collect this sample ahead of your vet visit and store it in the fridge until your appointment.
