How do you prevent your dog’s belly from getting swollen?

Many of the conditions that can cause a swollen abdomen can be picked up during your dog’s annual wellness appointment, specifically through the physical exam, bloodwork, and deworming and/or stool testing.

At home, you can decrease your dog’s chance of stomach bloat by feeding them two smaller meals a day instead of one large one, and avoiding strenuous exercise after they eat. Monitor their bowel movements to make sure they are passing stool every day.

If you own an intact female dog that you are not planning to breed, be extra cautious when she is in heat and attracting the attention of male dogs, which could lead to an unplanned pregnancy. As they age, they will also be at increased risk of developing pyometra (uterine infections), so consider spaying your dog.

Pro Tips:

  • Going to see your veterinarian annually (or bi-annually) is a great way for the prevention or early diagnosis of some causes of abdominal swelling.
  • If you’re not breeding your dog, consider spaying her, especially if she’s approaching her senior life stage.
