How do you prevent your dog from drooling excessively?

For some dogs, such as dogs with droopy jowls, drooling can’t be prevented. Since this is part of their anatomy, it’s something you’ll probably have to get used to.

Since drooling can be due to a number of different causes, prevention is based on preventing these specific causes.

Nausea

This is likely due to your dog eating something outside of their regular diet, so preventing them from accessing these items will address this issue. Some dogs get nauseous from motion sickness, so sensitization to car rides may be helpful. Your vet may also prescribe you some anti-nausea medication.

Dental Disease or Oral Mass

Good dental habits are essential for good dental health. Brush your dog’s teeth regularly, and make sure your vet performs an oral exam as part of their annual physical exam.

Brushing your dog’s teeth regularly not only helps prevent dental disease, but can also help prevent oral masses or growths that contribute to excessive drooling.
