A veterinarian’s advice on dealing with decreasing appetite in dogs

When you first notice your dog is eating less, consider why they may be experiencing a drop in appetite.  Nausea, gastrointestinal disease, dietary indiscretions, dental concerns, pancreatitis, kidney disease, and even stress and boredom may be the cause.

If they are otherwise acting normally, it is generally safe to try offering a treat or home cooked food. If they are displaying any other abnormal behavior or symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea, or not drinking water, it is important to contact your veterinarian immediately.

A change in your dog’s eating habits or appetite usually indicates they are feeling unwell.
