A veterinarian’s advice on dealing with ‘falling over’ in dogs

It is always distressing to see your dog struggling to stand or falling over. In general, vestibular disease is one of the most common reasons for this, and carries the best prognosis. Other causes, however, can be much more serious.

As such, it is recommended to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible if your dog appears uncoordinated, weak, or ‘drunk’. All cases of incoordination require at least supportive care (help with mobility, nausea, etc), if nothing else.

A thorough physical exam can provide a wealth of information – in addition to any photos or videos you can capture of your dog’s symptoms ahead of visiting the vet.

With a bit of luck, and the right treatment plan, your dog will be back on track and getting into new kinds of trouble in no time.
