So what do dog seizures look like? Similar to human seizures, there is usually collapse, involuntary movement and often loss of consciousness followed by disorientation and confusion.
Not all seizures look the same but there are some common symptoms that dog owners should be aware of. Other signs that your dog is a having a seizure can include:
- Foaming at the mouth
- Drooling
- Chomping or chewing their tongue
- Muscle twitching or jerking motions
- Stiffening of the limbs
- Collapsing
- Loss of consciousness
Seizures are often mistaken for choking – they can look like the dog has something stuck in their throat. Do not try to put your hand in their mouth.
Some dogs will also fall over on their side and make paddling motions with their legs. It is also common to see a dog pee or poop while in the throws of a seizure.
There are warning signs of an imminent seizure that are displayed by some dogs. Things like looking confused, chewing or licking their lips or seeming dazed, appearing unsteady, or staring blankly can indicate that a seizure is coming. Once the seizure has ended, it is common to see your dog looking wobbly, disoriented, drooling, doing circle walks, banging into things, or even suffering from temporary blindness.
Dog seizures can also occur in sleep so you may not even be aware that your dog is having them.
