How do you know if vomiting is a sign of a serious problem or an emergency?

Most of the reasons why a dog vomits are not an emergency. The following checklist may help you decide how soon your pup needs to see his vet.

Call your veterinarian immediately if your dog has:

  • Repeated non-productive vomiting  or “dry heaves”
  • Abdominal distension or bloating
  • Not been drinking for more than one day (or a small amount of water causes vomiting)
  • Projectile vomiting
  • Severe lethargy, is non-responsive or has collapsed
  • Very pale or white gums

If your dog is experiencing frequent vomiting or showing any of these symptoms in addition to vomiting, it’s necessary to seek veterinary attention as soon as possible:

  • Diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Lethargy
  • Blood in vomit
  • Constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Change in appetite
  • Increase or decrease in thirst or urination
